Fallen Up at Weberknecht - Interview, Reportage, Live

English versionAm Sonntag, den 10.2., war ich mit Fallen Up im Webknecht und durfte die vier Vorarlberger bei ihren Auftritt begleiten. Das Ergebnis gibt es hier mit kurzem Interview, Backstagebildern und natürlich Konzertbildern.

On Sunday, the 2nd of February, I was at Weberknecht with Fallen Up and got the chance to accompany the four young men from Vorarlberg before, during and after their show. In this post, you can see the outcome with a short interview, backstage photos and, of course, live shots of their performance.

Konzert Review

Live präsentieren sich Fallen Up natürlich viel härter als zu vor noch Backstage. Ihren sehr dynamischen Sound kreieren und gestalten sie mit den verschiedensten Stilmitteln. Half-time, Rhythmuswechsel, harte Breaks, mehrstimmiger Gesang von melodisch bis gegrölt, richtig fette Gitarrenriffs, aber auch sehr ruhige Passagen, sind nur einige die mir während des Auftrittes im Weberknecht sofort aufgefallen sind. Sowohl die weitangereisten Kollegen und Fans, als auch die Besucher, die eine nicht so weite Anreise hatten, wurden also nicht enttäuscht und bekamen das geboten, wofür Fallen Up steht: Attraktiven, soliden Metal. Mit Freude kann man also auf ihr viertes Studio Album warten, welches sich momentan gerade in Produktion befindet, um zu sehen, was die Vier als nächstes für ihre Fans und Metal- und Musikliebhaber auf Platte bringen.

Not surprisingly, Fallen up presented themselves a lot harder live on stage than backstage. Their very dynamic sound is created with lots of different stylistic elements. Half-time beats, changes in rhythm, hard breaks, polyphonic singing from melodic to bawled vocals, really fat guitar riffs, as well as calm passages are some of the aspects that immediately struck me during their performance at Weberknecht. All the fans and colleagues, who travelled so far to join the band for their show, as well as the other guests from not so far away, none of them got disappointed and were offered what Fallen Up stands for: attractive, solid metal. That's why everyone gets to look forward to their fourth album, which is currently being recorded, and being excited to see what the four musicians will put together on their next record for their fans and all music or metal lovers,

Euch gibt es jetzt schon seit 2006. Was hat sich bei euch persönlich, musikalisch, beziehungsweise allgemein in der Musikszene seit dem verändert?

Für drei von uns ist das fast das halbe Leben, darum würde ich sagen, dass sich so ziemlich alles zwischenzeitlich geändert hat. Einfacher wäre es zu sagen, was gleich geblieben ist: Wir lieben immer noch Metal, wir sind immer noch Brüder im Geiste und wir speisen immer noch jedes Jahr zu Martins Geburtstag die besten Rippchen der Welt.

Man hat euch jetzt lange nicht Live gehört, habt ihr vor wieder öfter Live aufzutreten?

Planen kann man viel. (lacht) Natürlich würden wir gerne öfter live spielen, aber das ist nicht ganz einfach, wenn man auf drei Bundesländer verteilt ist; in unserem Fall Wien, die Steiermark und Vorarlberg.

Glaubt ihr, dass es Bands weit ab der Hauptstadt bzw. großen Städten schwerer haben?

Ja und Nein. Man hat natürlich mehr Möglichkeiten in großen Städten, aber die Konkurrenz ist auch wesentlich größer als „auf dem Lande“.

Freut mich, dass ihr es nach Wien ins Weberknecht geschafft habt. Habt ihr schon Erfahrungen hier bzw. in und mit Wien?

Ja, wir hatten vor zwei Jahren das Vergnügen, im „Replugged“ zu spielen. Ich würde sogar sagen, dass das eines unserer besten Konzerte gewesen ist. Auch wenn Wien für die halbe Band eine Reise durch ganz Österreich bedeutet, kommen wir immer gerne!

Gibt es ein Lieblingsthema, wovon eure Lieder überwiegend handeln?

Früher haben wir häufig Persönlicheres behandelt, momentan sind wir ziemlich gesellschaftskritisch unterwegs. Unsere vier neuesten Lieder setzen sich mit Themen auseinander, die mir selbst unheimlich wichtig sind, z.B. mit verschiedenen Machtdiskursen.

Da ich auch aus der Metalecke komme, würde es mich interessieren warum oder wie ihr euch genau für Metal entschieden habt?

Das ist eine unheimlich spannende Geschichte. Es hat sich einfach so ergeben! Unsere Lieblingsbands waren und sind Metal-Bands und so war es wohl einfach natürlich, dass wir uns auch in diese Richtung entwickelt haben.

Ich habe gelesen, dass ihr an eurem 4. Album arbeitet. Gibt es eine Aufnahme, mit der ihr besonders viel verbindet oder glaubt ihr, wird die neue besser als andere davor?

Alle Musiker glauben oder hoffen wenigstens, dass sie immer besser werden. Das gilt auch für uns und tatsächlich glaube ich, dass das vierte Album ein wenig straighter wird als seine Vorgänger: Die Lieder sind klarer strukturiert und weniger „bombastisch“, als wir sie früher konzipiert haben, ganz nach dem Motto: Weniger ist mehr. Persönlich verbinde ich viel mit dem Lied „Unbroken“ von unserem dritten Album „Dead Heart’s Lullaby“, in dem es um die ganz besondere Freundschaft innerhalb unserer Band geht.

Was habt ihr nach eurem Album als nächstes noch geplant?

Erst einmal machen wir dieses Album fertig, dann sehen wir weiter! (lacht) Natürlich wollen wir so oft wie möglich live auftreten, Spaß haben und uns durch unsere Musik ausdrücken. Das war immer unser Plan und wird es vermutlich auch bleiben!

Zum Abschluss noch ein schnelles Frage/Antwort-Spiel:

Würdet ihr beim ESC mitmachen?

Natürlich! Wir würden da ein wenig frischen Wind hineinbringen und hätten zurzeit sogar europagemäße Themen im Programm. Über die letzten Jahre gab es beim ESC viel zu wenige Überraschungen und viel zu wenig Rock und Metal.
Lieblingsbühnenoutfits?

Je schwärzer, desto besser!
Wer ist der Chef in der Band?

Einen eindeutigen Chef haben wir nicht. Allerdings haben Lukas und Martin, die beiden Gitarristen, die Zügel am häufigsten in den Händen. Trotzdem führt ihr das Interview mit mir! (lacht)
Bestes Konzert gespielt?

Es ist ein Klischee, aber wir finden jedes Konzert super. Am besten gespielt haben wir aber vermutlich vor zwei Jahren im „Replugged“ und letztes Jahr in der Bludenzer „Villa K.“.
Bestes Konzert besucht?

Das ist Geschmackssache, also kann ich nur für mich selbst sprechen. Mein bisheriges Highlight war „Rammstein“, die wir damals noch mit Patrick, unserem vorigen Schlagzeuger, gesehen haben – die sind showtechnisch unschlagbar und einfach extrem cool.

Your band has existed since 2006. What has changed for you personally, musically as well as generally in the music scene since then?

For three of us, that’s half of our lifes so I’d say that almost everything has changed since then. It’s easier to tell you what stayed the same: We still love metal, we are still spiritual brothers and we still eat the best rips in the world every year on Martins birthday.

You didn't perform live for a while now, are you planning on putting on more live shows again?

Planning is easy. (laughing) Of course we’d like to live perform more often, but it’s not that easy when you are seperated by federal states. In our case those would be Vienna, Styria and Vorarlberg.

Do you think it's more difficult to be successful for bands, who are not based in the capital city or other big cities?

Yes and no. Of course there are more possibilities in big cities, but there is also more competion than on the countryside.

I'm glad you managed to come to Vienna, to play at Weberknecht. Did you gain any experience in and with Vienna before?

Yes, two years ago we had the pleasure to play at „Replugged“. Actually I’d say that was one of the best concerts we ever played. Even though coming to Vienna means that half of the band has to cross the whole country, we still love to be here!

Is there a topic, that your songs are mainly about?

In the early days our songs were often about personal things, but at the moment we are more focused on being critical of society. Our four newest songs are about issues that are extremely important to me, e.g. different power discourses.

Since I am a metal enthusiast myself, it interests me why and how you decided to play this genre?

That’s a very exciting story. It just so happened! Our favourite bands were and are of the metal genre, so it was just natural that our band developed in that direction.

I have read that you are working on your fourth album. Are there any records that you are especially attached to, or do you think the new one will be better than your previous ones?

Every musician thinks, or at least hopes, that they are becoming better and better. That’s also true for us and I acutally think, that the new record will be straighter then the previous ones: The songs are more clearly structured and less „bombastic“ than the earlier ones, based on the motto: less is more. Personally I am very attached to the song „Unbroken“ of our third album „Dead Heart’s Lullaby“, that deals with the special friendship between the members of our band.

What have you planned for after finishing the new record?

First we are going to finish this record, then we’ll see! (laughing) Of course, we want to perform live a lot, have fun and express ourselves through our music. That was our plan since the beginning and it probably always will be.

Finally, a quick question/answer game:

Would you participate at the ESC?

Of course! We would introduce something new to the contest and we’d even have some fitting topics regarding Europe. Over the last few years there were too little surprises, rock and metal in the ESC.
Favourite on-stage outfits?

The blacker, the better!
Who is the head of the band?

We don’t have an explicit leader of the band. However, the two guitarists Lukas and Martin are often holding the reins. Still you are doing this interview with me! (laughing)
Best concert you played?

It’s a cliché, but we love every single one of our shows. Anyway, we probably were at our bests two years ago at „Replugged“ and last year in Bludenz at „Villa K.“.
Best concert you attended?

That’s a matter of taste, so I can only speak of myself. My personal highlight was „Rammstein“, which, back then, we still saw with our previous drummer Patrick – they are invincible regarding the stage show and just extremely cool.
