Schottenfest 2018

English version
'With live music, art and historical presentations, the Schottenfest 2018 - like the Gaelic Monks and Irish before - is a new festival and platform for integration, creativity and learning. These musical concerts and presentations will take place around the first district and beyond, celebrating the rich historical links of the Viennese and the Gael, and that long lasting tradition and link between Ireland, Scotland and Austria.'

Tag 1

Day 1

The third Schottenfest started with the cozy atmosphere at the Ruby Marie Hotel & Bar. The opening act of the Vienna Pipes and Drums is an annual part of the starting event, as well as the speeches of one of the co-organizers Shane and the Irish ambassador.
After a short singer-songwirter-session, among others with Ray Heffernan and Stuart Neville, the opening event at the Ruby Marie ended and the guests set out for a traditionell music session at the Molly Darcy's.

Day 2

The second day got started in the early afternoon at Molly Darcy's with a lecture about the history of the Scottish in Vienna and the Schottenstift, at which afterwards there was a guided tour for the visitors of the festival.

In the evening, once again there was the main event at the Theater am Spittelberg. The main acts of the night were Emma Langford, David Kennan and Mundy on a stage, which was wrapped in warm lights.

Emma didn't just enchant the audience with her sparkling outfit, but also with her playful lightness. With emotional lyrics and a perfect mixture of Folk and Jazz, she opened the main event at the Theater am Spittelberg.

David Keenan

One of the most charismatic artists I had ever seen put on his show next, David Keenan. Already when he was interviewed before the concert, it was clear, that his performance was going to be fantastic. David Keenan writes very intense lyrics and pairs his dynamic music with an expressive stage presence.

The closing act of the evening was Mundy, who some of you might know through his famous song "Galway Girl". Anyway, he convinces with his other songs too. With his sense for melody, his perfect use of effects and loops and his very unmistakable voice he made this evening an unforgettable one for the audience.

As well as so many nights of this festival, that marks itself through sociable moments and a lot of good talks with other music and culture interested people as well as very sympathetic stars, before, it endet at the backroom of the Molly Darcy's with an atmospheric session, which was joined also from the main acts.

Day 3

On the third day the visitors had the opportunity to join a workshop of the fantastic songwriter Ray Heffernan, before the event went on with another musical highlight at the cellar of the Schottenstift.

At this wonderful room full of history, right underneath the Schottenstift, with it's impressive vaults of bricks and acoustics, Danaí Kelleher and Antonia Ní Norica opened the sunday afternoon with a short concert with the topic "Irish Roots". After a short break and a glass of Jameson, Stuart Neville carried on. As the closing and the last official act of the festival, Ray Heffernan entered the stage and fascinated the audience with his very empathetic lyrics and his sad, as well as dreamy stories behind the songs.

Ray Heffernan

Ray is the kind of songwriter you would imagine, when thinking of this genre. Interested in arts and history, communicative, his lyrics partly resembling a fairy tale and are philosophical and deep at the same time - that's how I had the pleasure to get to know him so far. At the end, he finished up with one of my favorite songs "Wolf Whistle The Moon" and with some shared songs with Stuart, the afternoon at the cellar of the Schottenstift was perfectly wrapped up.

The successful festival ended with a fun wrap up party at the Molly Darcy's.

Schottenfest - We'll see you next year!
